The Dieppe Raid occurred on August 19, 1942, at the port of Dieppe, on the Channel Coast of France.
The Dieppe Raid was a significant military blunder that occurred in the third year of World War II. It was significant because it represented a decisive defeat of the Allies, and a significant victory for the Wehrmacht. Although allied forces did extensively record the event, the Wehrmacht did film the aftermath.
The “Deutsche Wochenschau” was a propaganda newsreel produced by the Third Reich from June 1940 until March 1945. Political, military, cultural and sporting events from Germany and foreign countries were topics. Number 625 (August 26, 1942) related failure of The Dieppe Raid, and the film depicts the extensive damage of combat, and the extensive casualties and captured prisoners.
The photograph below depicts four Canadian prisoners evacuating a wounded L/Cpl Harry William Manchester off of RED BEACH at the conclusion of the Dieppe Raid. Harry was seriously wounded by (assumed) mortar fire shell fragments after landing on RED BEACH. He carried many small fragments under his skin for the remainder of his life.
