Dear Frances:
I think I promised
you a letter, so here it is. It sure is hot this last couple of days isn’t it.
We are almost cooking with these heavy clothes and equipment on.
We went on the
scheme last night. We left barracks at seven, and by the time we marched out
there, it was dark. Then we got in some time between eleven and twelve. Then I
had a nice hot shower before I went to bed.
Artifact 1940-06-02-a – Letter to Mrs. Elton Newman, sent from Windsor, Ontario, Canada – Page 1.
The envelope for this letter is missing. Based upon letter content, the date of the letter is believed to be June 2, 1940. Base artifact name arbitrarily set to “1940-06-02”.
The actual date of this artifact is unknown because the artifact itself is undated, and there is no accompanying envelope with postmarks. However, the artifact is believed to have been written Sunday, June 2, 1940. This date supposition is based on the timing of the departure of the “advance party” mentioned in Art_1940-06-01 (this artifact) and Art_1940-06-04.

Dear Franc:-
Was so glad to know that you received my first letter okay. I have been thinking that you should soon get one from me. I hope Onn. got one too for her birthday. I got a letter from her a couple days ago & she said then that would be the best present she could get. She hadn’t received any from up until that time yet.
